John Worsley paints a depiction of the infamous Captain Cook meeting natives on the South Sea Islands for this page of a Wee Willie Winkie story published in Treasure magazine.
In a rare example of a signed piece, Willie recounts the meeting in a thought bubble, which culminated in Cook's untimely demise. With the magnificent HMS Endeavour in the background, the sailors in the foreground bring a skiff ashore whilst Cook introduces himself to the natives.
With working pencil lines visible beneath the watercolour in parts of the image, this piece gives a great sense of the artist's working process which is rarely seen. Further annotations handwritten in pencil to the top of the illustration board give further insight into the Worsley's world.
