Artist: John Worsley (biography)
Medium: Watercolour on Board
Size: 28" x 19" (700mm x 470mm)
Date: 1970

This is the unique original Watercolour painting by John Worsley.

The sheer intensity of the Chinese street scene, packed so full of buildings, signs and characters, allows Worsley to flourish and really show his strengths as an illustrator, each figure painted meticulously whilst achieving a vibrancy and friendliness typical of the Winkie stories.

Worsley's free human lines contrast with the straight structures of the grey concrete in the distance to create a fabulous narrative framed by the vibrancy of the street scene.

An incredibly charged full colour page painted for a Wee Willie Winkie story published in Treasure magazine January 10th 1970.

Worsley, who spent time in a P.O.W. camp after being captured in Yugoslavia during World War II, achieves a fantastic liberation from the past by painting in such a fluid joyful manner.

Worsley's work can be found in The Imperial War Museum, The Maritime Museum, The collection of HM The Queen, The Savage club and many other private collections including those of Royal Families, banks and Colleges.
