Painted and dated 1895. Inscription on the reverse.. Major Schill was born in 1776 and was killed 31st May 1809 in combat with the French. On 16th September 1809 in Wesel eleven officers of Schill's Regiment were executed by shooting for insurrection. Stralsund, in Pomerania, is a strongly fortified House town built about 1230. It resisted a fierce siege by Wallenstein in 1678, was taken by Frederick William of Brandenburg in 1678, restored to the Swedes 1679, and recaptured by the Prussians and their allies in December 1715. It surrendered to the French under Brune on 20 August 1807, and was awarded to Prussia in 1815. Professionally matted ready for framing.
