This is the unique original Watercolour painting by Eric Parker.

In 1704 Britain attained naval supremacy in the Mediterranean by capturing Gibraltar. Admiral George Rooke suggested the plan which had not been attempted before because of the strength of the defences.

After 15,000 rounds of cannon fire were shot in one morning, marines were landed to capture the vital south molehead. (right panel). The troops advanced and the following day the garrison surrendered.

Four years after the capture Rooke died and Sir Clowdsley Shovel - the most senior of his lieutenants succeeded him as Vice Admiral of England.
