Grenville's ship the Revenge was one of seven ships that were sent to the Azores in the aftermath of the Spanish Armada defeat to wait for returning Spanish treasure ships.
However the Spanish had sent 53 ships to escort the treasure carriers. All of the English ships had sick men ashore when the Spanish fleet appeared. Six managed to get their crews off and get out to sea. The Revenge however was trapped. The fight (pictured top) lasted from 3pm until midnight. At this point Grenville wanted to scuttle what was little more than a wreck but the crew wanted to surrender as long as the Spanish gave them free passage. This was accomplished.
Bottom: a depiction of Sovereign of the Seas - launched from Woolwich in 1637, it was Britain's first three-decker although it was later cut down to two decks.
