On his second voyage of discovery Cook had two ships with him, HMS Resolution and HMS Adventure. He successfully circumnavigated the world travelling the southern oceans were possible.
He also retraced his first journey in part be visiting Tahiti and also discovered New Caledonia. In the three years this took, from 1772-75 he lost just one man; this was largely due to the ships diet of fresh meat, fruit and vegetables.
His third journey had the aim of finding a northern passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. He didn't succeed but did plot most of the American and Canadian West Coast. It was on his way home that he landed again in Hawaii where he was killed.
