Although ship designs evolved over the years, little attention was paid to the crucial matter of improving the design of the ship's hull. The father and son business run by Peter and Phineas Pett changed that.
Above: they redesigned hulls so that larger and just as importantly faster ships could be built. Father Peter built the Prince Royal in 1610 and son Phineas the Sovereign of the Sea in 1637.
