This colourful illustration shows Dr. William Brydon CB (1811-1873), an assistant surgeon in the British East India Company Army, escaping from an ambush during the retreat from Kabul (January 1842). Dr. Brydon was the only European to escape from the Afghan guerrillas, arriving in Jalabad on 13th January 1842.

Dr. Brydon later took part in the Second Anglo-Burmese War, and was present during the siege of the Lucknow Residency in 1857.
