The Tawny Owl (Strix Aluco) is one of the more common owls in Britain and across Europe. They are about 40cm tall and are usually coloured mottled-brown and buff but can be grey. Their call is the one most people would recognise as an owl when heard at night. They are fond of parks and woodland but are increasingly found in urban areas. An attractive portrait by Ken Lilly that was originally used in Look and Learn #335, 15th June 1968.Kenneth Lilly biography
