1970This is the original Gouache painting by Peter Jackson.
Richard Chancellor is taken to meet Tsar Ivan by sledge. Some lovely detail by Peter Jackson in both the faces and the decoration on the harness and sledge. Chancellor had been second in command of three ships trying to find a Northern passage to the East.
Two ships were lost in a storm off Norway and only his ship made safe anchorage in the little known land of Muscovy (Russia). The year was 1555. He later learned the other ships had been caught in ice and the crews frozen to death. On a return voyage Chancellor himself was shipwrecked.
The painting was published in Treasure issue 378, 11th April 1970.
