Original watercolour painting used in Look and Learn 31st March 1979 to illustrate the story of Peter Carder. In 1578, whilst in the Straits of Magellan, Francis Drake sent Carder and 7 sailors in a small pinnace to join the ship Elizabeth. They lost sight of the Elizabeth and despite searching for 2 days never found her. Two of the sailors were killed by Indians and another 4 drowned. The remaining two sailors Peter Carder and William Pitcher eventually found mainland, but William Pitcher died of exposure.

Peter Carder befriended local Indians and after 6 months set off for the Portuguese town of Bahia de Todos os Santos. He lived there for 6 years and eventually made it home to Chichester in 1586, almost 9 years after he set sail with Drake. Queen Elizabeth I received him at Court to hear about his adventures. The painting shows the pinnace leaving Drakes ship.
