This is the unique original Gouache painting by Richard Hook.

From the series Unwillingly to School the episode 'Crime' - and Punishment. Joseph Lancaster ran schools during the reign of George III. He charged poor parents four pence per week per child. He saved on teachers pay by having older boys as monitors.

Having a dunce sign around your neck was far from the worst thing that could happen at these schools. Despite there being no corporal punishment misbehaving children might be shackled together for a day or even amazingly hung in sacks from the school's roof.

Original artwork published in Look and Learn issue 462, 21st November 1970.
