Britons Defend the Thames (Original) (Ref: EmbletonRJCThamesLL)
Artist: Ron Embleton Medium: Gouache on Board Size: 12" x 15" (300mm x 390mm) Date: 1979This is the original Gouache painting by Ron Embleton. British tribes, led by Cassivellaunus, tried to prevent the Roman legionaries of Julius Caesar from crossing the Thames at Brentford in 54 BC. They failed and were defeated in a fierce battle. Syon House stands almost on the site of that great fight. Catherine Howard was imprisoned at Syon House before her execution. On a lighter note Charles, Duke of Somerset, who once owned the house had his eccentricities, including wanting one of his daughters to watch over him when he took a nap. Originally published in Look and Learn 1st September 1979. Some discolouration above the Roman's heads due to a lost caption leaving a glue residue. zMilitary zHistorical zLck
