Sir Richard Whittington (1354-1423) was a merchant and politician who was also the real-life inspiration behind the pantomime character, Dick Whittington. He bequeathed his fortune to form the Charity of Sir Richard Whittington (founded 1424), which still operates in 21st Century Britain. Sir Richard was Lord Mayor of London four times (1397, 1398, 1406 and 1419). This illustration shows two scenes from Sir Richard's life, firstly, his position as a scullery boy when he first came to London, and secondly, his successful cloth business. zBook zHistorical zFairy zPolitical zLck
