(Ref: DoughtyBoxerReb)

Artist: Cecil Doughty
Medium: Watercolour on Board
Size: 18" x 12" (460mm x 300mm)
Date: 1977

This is the original Watercolour painting by Cecil Doughty.

Scenes from various stages of the Boxer Rebellion.

Top left: the Japanese ambassador is cut down. Centre panel the Austro-Hungarians used machine guns on the Chinese.

Right panel: a Boxer arsonist is shot on sight.

The main image shows the relief column marching in. The troops came from many regions of the world including Sheiks, Americans, Japanese, French Souaves and even Cossacks. The Boxers or "The Fists of Harmonious Righteousness" were a peasant movement that sought to end Western influence in China, be it trading or Missionaries converting locals to Christianity. This impressive art by C L Doughty first appeared in the 16th April, 1977 edition of Look and Learn.
