Description: Biffo the Bear is a delight to screenprint. The bold features and clean outlines of the drawings and the bright colours of the front pages make him a very good subject for the medium.
Biffo was on the front cover of The Beano starting from 1948 and he lasted there until 1974, when Dennis the Menace took over. Biffo was originally drawn by Dudley D Watkins and David Sutherland took over in 1969.
I love the idea of taking an image from the Beano narrative and presenting it out of context. Chosen carefully the picture becomes an absurd snap-shot in time.
The story tells you how Biffo came to be chasing a bath down a hill. Without the story, you've no idea. I've chosen to use just the black and red from the original image. Signed by the printmaker John Patrick Reynolds from an edition of just 10.
