Alpine Adventure (Original) (Ref: BaraldiHannibal99LL)
Artist: Severino Baraldi Medium: Gouache on Board Size: 24" x 16" (600mm x 400mm) Date: 1979This is the original Gouache painting by Severino Baraldi. Clash of Giants: How Hannibal Marched into History. Hannibal crossing the Alps was an undertaking the like of which the world had never seen - a whole army, complete with elephants was being taken over the Alps to do battle with Rome. Hannibal lost half his men and many of his elephants in the crossing, but it was an extraordinary achievement none-the-less. The insert shows elephants crossing the Rhone on rafts. In order to trick the elephants to think they were still on dry land while crossing the river, Hannibal had their rafts covered with earth. The trick worked. This is the original artwork from Look and Learn no. 924 (6 October 1979). Please note a pentagon shaped piece of the board about 120mm x 120mm was removed by Look and Learn production staff, possibly to add text, and then restored to the artwork. This affects a section of the mountains in the background and none of the figures. Would be barely visible once under glass. zAdventure zMilitary zHistorical zNature zLck
