The River That Didn't Lead To China (Original)

(Ref: BaraldiCartierLL)

Artist: Severino Baraldi
Medium: Gouache on Board
Size: 21" x 16" (530mm x 400mm)

This is the original Gouache painting by Severino Baraldi.

Jacques Cartier (inset) sailed up the St Lawrence in a vain attempt to find a route to Cathay - and instead earned himself the title of "Father of Canada". Walking alone on the shore shortly before his departure for France, Cartier found the once-friendly Indians confronting him angrily. They thought, correctly as it turned out, that Cartier was planning to abduct their chief.

This is the original artwork for illustrations on pp8-9 of Look and Learn issue no 865 (12 August 1978).
