Description: William Scoresby had many adventures whilst whaling in the Arctic, but his most serious escapade happened when he was a young man. While serving aboard a government ship he was captured by the Spanish and thrown into jail.
Undeterred, William and his shipmates bided their time until the guards dozed in the sun, then overpowered them and fled to the safety of Gibraltar. Drawn to illustrate p17 of Look and Learn issue no. 533.
