Repulsing the Famous Prussian Guard at Ypres (World War I) (Signed) (Limited Edition)

Artist: Fortunino Matania
Medium: Limited edition Print (Lithograph) on Paper
Size: 15" x 10" (381mm x 254mm)
Signature: Signed by Artist
Description: One of a series of 12 artist proof signed prints produced for the Sphere & Tatler in 1916, 'With the British Army on the Western Front'. The searchlights showed the Germans advancing straight on the Allies, a few hundred yards to the south of Zonnebeke. The attacking troops were exclusively composed of the Prussian Guard. Suddenly the German ranks opened and the machine-guns appeared. The situation was critical, and the British general immediately gave the order for a bayonet charge. A colonel dashed forward at the head of his regiment crying, “ For honour and England”. The opposing front ranks met in a terrible shock, and the bayonets frequently went home at the same moment. This hand-to-hand combat lasted for an eternal half-hour, and the troops, on both sides fought with the grimmest determination. Before the irresistible onslaught of the British soldiers the Prussian Guard reeled and broke.

Description: One of a series of 12 artist proof signed prints produced for the Sphere & Tatler in 1916, 'With the British Army on the Western Front'. It was 2:30 in the afternoon, and between Le Cateau and Landrecies, and a party of wounded soldiers were resting on the floor of a small church over which the Red Cross flag was floating.
A German shell burst open the door, smashing the beautiful pillars and moulded stonework, and further shells continued to burst upon the building, and so the wounded men, bearing as best they could their more severely wounded comrades along with them, fled to a more sheltered spot.

Description: One of a series of 12 artist proof signed prints produced for the Sphere & Tatler in 1916, 'With the British Army on the Western Front'. It was a rainy, uncertain day, with flashes of sunlight brightening the landscape at intervals.
At the sides of a long, straight road were standing British troops, shoulder to shoulder, company upon company, extending in one long perspective of khaki until the lines merged in the far distance. The muddy road was full of watery ruts which glinted to the passing gleams of light as the rain clouds parted. At the moment, however, it was not raining, and the men were carrying their overcoats rolled in bandolier fashion.
The long lines stood waiting, the company commanders a little in advance of the men. Then from the distance came a little group of officers. Distant cheering could be heard, which as the group approached burst into spontaneous shouts of welcome as King George, followed by the Prince of Wales and the staff, became clearly visible. The cheers were not of the formal parade-ground character; they came from men who could not await their strict turn to cheer. The greeting must out. The King smiled back his answer to the right and then to the left and passed. . . . In a few moments the scene had vanished; the long lines splashed their way back to work, glad at heart, for the King, the highest in the land, had been among them.

Description: One of a series of 12 artist proof signed prints produced for the Sphere & Tatler in 1916, 'With the British Army on the Western Front'. “An order arrives by telephone: a soldier repeats it loudly; the officer unfolds his map hurriedly and looks, and raps out, ‘tell the observer we will fire on X'.”
The men are busy round the gun; the officer in the foreground is just receiving a message which has come by way of the field telephone. One man is pressing down the spade at the end of the cylindrical trail, while another holds the shell in readiness. The row of field guns is screened from enemy gaze by various means.

During the night the enemy had been strongly reinforced, and on the morning of November 12 made a desperate effort to retake the village; but the French and British delivered a brilliant counter attack and drove the enemy back. In the afternoon the combined forces of the Allies, supported by artillery, took the offensive and completed the rout of the enemy. Several other guns and a number of prisoners were taken in this final phase of the encounter.

Artist: Fortunino Matania

Description: One of a series of 12 artist proof signed prints produced for the Sphere & Tatler in 1916, 'With the British Army on the Western Front'. The officers are at tea. An orderly has just brought in a fresh brew and has placed the pot upon the table. “A half-cup, sir?” inquires the subaltern officer. “Thank you, yes.”
Maps dangle over the edge of the table to make way for the jam pots, the sugar basin, the tea cups, and the bread and butter. Otherwise it is always maps, maps, maps everywhere! But now is the interlude of tea, and the steam from the cup mingles with the fragrant smell of good tobacco. An occasional bullet may splinter the rafters and the concussion of a shell may rattle the tea cups, but the walls of the room are well sand-bagged up to a comfortable height, and the serenity of the moment is not disturbed.

Description: One of a series of 12 artist proof signed prints produced for the Sphere & Tatler in 1916, 'With the British Army on the Western Front: Scene in a Stately French Chateau.' The despatch rider shown in the above picture has just arrived with despatches for the staff. His entry introduces into the dignified room a foreign element of excitement and rush-and-tumble. That his passages to and from the trenches are none too void of peril is evidenced by his plastered head and his general travel-stained air.
The staff officers wait with eagerness for the despatches he is fishing out of his big waterproof bag. The room in which the staff has installed itself is situated in one of those stately chateaux met with in parts of northern France. In one corner of the room, looking down on the scene of busy military activity, is a bust of Napoleon.
Portraits hanging from the walls and the elaborate chandelier above the table, all betoken the status and tastes of the chateau's former occupants.

In the Famous 'Plut Street' Wood (World War I) (Signed) (Limited Edition)

Artist: Fortunino Matania
Medium: Limited edition Print (Lithograph) on Paper
Size: 15" x 10" (381mm x 254mm)
Signature: Signed by Artist
Description: One of a series of 12 artist proof signed prints produced for the Sphere & Tatler in 1916, 'With the British Army on the Western Front'. A relief party is here seen marching along “Regent Street” from the wood, “Ploegsteert”, which early in the fighting became known to the Tommies – and subsequently to official despatches – as “Plug Street”.
They are marching along the narrow footway made of small branches closely packed together upon bigger transverse ones below. The men carry back with them from their billets their various personal belongings. Advancing with the party is a lieutenant, map in hand. The men are in no immediate danger – a long line of sand-bags, a little higher than a man, provides sufficient defence.
Above the height of 6 feet the slender trees are scarred with marks where the bullets hit then a glancing blow. Sometimes a man will turn his head to follow, as it were, the track of a singing bullet through the air. On the extreme right is a sand-bag shelter.

In a British Advanced Observation Post (World War I) (Signed) (Limited Edition)

Artist: Fortunino Matania
Medium: Numbered Limited edition Print (Lithograph)
Size: 15" x 10" (381mm x 254mm)
Signature: Signed by Artist
Description: One of a series of 12 artist proof signed prints produced for the Sphere & Tatler in 1916, 'With the British Army on the Western Front'. This print subtitled 'How Artillery Fire is Observed and Corrected'.

(The task of observing artillery fire is one of the most difficult and trying which our soldiers have to perform. The observation post is often located in a shattered house, almost on the point of collapse. The approach to such posts is tedious and extremely perilous. The observation post depicted is a sand-bagged cottage, so battered by shell-fire that it trembled with every step one took.
The men live in entire isolation, without being able to move, sometimes not even to speak beyond a whisper, with difficulty keeping themselves in equilibrium on the insecure floor; many of these ruined houses, some fortified inside with sand-bags, other standing only by a miracle. It is not always possible to use all the rooms because some are almost collapsing and others are too much exposed to the enemy, being generally near the firing line.
The officers endeavour to embellish these tragic surroundings, using a few pieces of remaining furniture, decorating the walls with war trophies, maps or with photographs of their dear ones.)

Artist: Fortunino Matania
Medium: Numbered Limited edition Print (Lithograph)
Size: 15" x 10" (381mm x 254mm)
Signature: Signed by Artist
Description: One of a series of 12 artist proof signed prints produced for the Sphere & Tatler in 1916, 'With the British Army on the Western Front'.

(The communication trench is the place which affords the opportunity for the display of all the sporting qualities of the British soldier. Much has already been written about these trenches and the various ways they are constructed. A guide is always required by a stranger entering these mazes.
Unpleasant surprises crop up at many points. The sniper is a constant danger, and cover from the enemy's bullets scanty. In the drawing I show one of these trenches through which I myself passed. It is a long double wall of sand-bags from 3 feet to 4 feet high. The height of the sand-bags renders it advisable to proceed in a stooping fashion, bent almost double. Many of these trenches cannot be used during the day; in others you may even lead a pony through without undue danger. Outside in all directions there is the horror of war in full display.
I saw the body of a horse which was slowly decomposing and sinking into the earth, yet it could not be removed, because it was certain death for anyone to attempt to remove it. An officer said to me, “If you are tired of life, try to reach it,” and yet the body was only a few yards away. Soldiers are passing and repassing, perspiring, laughing, joking and teasing one another, whilst every now and then the noise is drowned by a voice, "Keep your head down, you d-----d fool" - F. Matania.)

Description: One of a series of 12 artist proof signed prints produced for the Sphere & Tatler in 1916, 'With the British Army on the Western Front'.

(On arrival at the railhead, or at any other place where sick and wounded are to be taken up, the O.C. of the train receives from the Ambulance Train Embarkation Medical Officer a list of patients who are for the train, so many “sitting” cases and so many “ lying” or stretcher cases. Either he or one of the two junior M.O.'s of the train or both of them, remain on the platform and with this list check each patient and he arrives, and detail him a place on the train.
The sisters remain on the train and receive patients and see that they are comfortably settled, fed and attended to. Orderlies also remain on each coach to help receive the wounded. Other orderlies unload the patients from the ambulances and carry them to the medical officer, who details them to different coaches.
Sometimes the wounded arrive so quickly that the staff are obliged to set them down in rows. In the latest British-made trains the wounded are passed easily through the wide folding doors. The men are very clever at raising the wounded without jarring them.)
