Art of the Trigan Empire

Illustration Art | Art of the Trigan Empire

Welcome to our gallery section devoted to - you've guessed it - the Art of the Trigan Empire, as painted over the years for Look and Learn by such luminaries as Don Lawrence, Ron Embleton and Oliver Frey, amongst others. All the art featured here is shown in our recently published full-colour catalogue of original art for sale called The Art Of The Trigan Empire which is also for sale!

Background to the Trigan Empire
Along with Dan Dare, the Trigan Empire was the longest running and most popular adventure comic strip ever produced for British comics. Printed in full colour on superior paper in Look and Learn the art stood apart from all its contemporaries. As well as being a gripping adventure story, the principal reason for its huge success was the lush art itself. The artistic skill of Don Lawrence in visually creating the worlds of Trigan established a standard of illustration that many of his contemporary artists aspired to emulate. Stunning colours and dramatic pages of art helped the adventures of the Trigan Empire to become a firm favourite for comic and art fans alike. Today, original copies of Look and Learn magazine are much sought after and sales of the new reprint books prove that the art is as popular now as it was 40 years ago.

Don Lawrence and Ron Embleton shared the same agent and when Don needed a break from the strip, Ron stood in and created some of his best ever comic strip work. Both artists clearly admired each other’s work and both were at the top of their field. After Lawrence’s departure from the strip, Miguel Quesada, Philip Corke, Oliver Frey and Gerry Wood continued to sustain its high level of artistic achievement.

We hope you enjoy browsing this unique collection of Trigan art. These are the originals - not prints - and are unique! The pages below display the art in the same chronological order as the catalogue.
